[Class 40 (iii)] In four - terminal networks for filtering, simulating cables and other purposes, the requisite number of elements is reduced by coupling the series arms of a T- or H -section to a reactance comprising two or more elements and having an infinite value for direct currents. The mutual inductance may take the form of a coil 16 with a load a linking the series arms 14, 15, Fig. 1, the shunt arm comprising a suitable impedance b ; or a balanced form of this arrangement may be adopted, Fig. 3, (not shown) ; or the series arms 38, 39 may be directly coupled, Fig. 4, and Figs. 2, 5, 6, (not shown), the load a, comprising the parts 35, 36, 37, in Fig. 4, being shunted across one of them, 38. In any case the impedance of the load a must not be zero for direct current. Networks of the kind described may be connected in parallel or series, Figs. 7, 8, (not shown), for operating currents of different frequencies. The coupling between the series arms may be loose or tight. The invention is shown as applied to filters of Cauer classes 3b, Fig. 4, 3b<*> Fig. 5, (not shown), and 3d, Fig. 6, (not shown).
