Abstract

272,013. Harrison, H. T., and Campbell, G. May 1, 1926. Cells; connections. - A number of cells forming a battery are connected together by inverted V- shaped tubes or by longitudinal conduits formed in the sealing material or cover of the battery to enable the cells to be filled with electrolyte in a single operation. Fig. 1 shows a number of cells connected by tubes 4, the last cell being provided with a filling aperture which may be bent so that it is vertical when the battery is laid on its side. An outlet 7 for air is provided in the cell at the opposite end of the battery. The connections between the electrodes of adjacent cells may be embedded in the sealing material 3 or they may be exposed at the top to provide tappings. Figs. 5 and 6 show in plan and elevation a battery of cells having a removable cover 8 provided with longitudinal grooves 9, 10 from which branch tubes 11 lead to the various cells. The grooves 9, 10 may be covered with sealing material 12 and are formed with a filling aperture and an air outlet. The connections between the cells are embedded in insulating material 15 in a channel in the cover. The battery may be provided with spring- controlled valves as described in Specifications 262,016 and 269,633. According to the Provisional Specification, instead of the V-shaped tubes and longitudinal grooves, apertures may be provided in the partitions between the cells.
