Abstract

271,899. Chilowsky, C. July 16, 1925, [Convention date]. Addition to 183,828. Oil gas; materials for making gas.-In the generation of oil gas by atomizing and gasifying oil with combustion products as described in the parent Specification, the reaction is completed in contact with a metallic or non-metallic catalyst at a temperature of from 700-1000‹ C. Oil and air are supplied through pipes 10, 11 to a combustion chamber 9, and the products issuing therefrom atomize oil supplied through a pipe 12 to a chamber 14 containing the catalyst 15 ; additional air may be admitted through a pipe 20 and apertures 14<1> together with steam generated in a coil 18<1>. The gas escapes through a conduit 17 surrounding the air pipe. In a modification, the gas passes through a cooler to the inlet of an internal combustion engine. Chloride of zinc, magnesium or aluminium, or bromides may be mixed with the oil before reaching the catalyst; coal in colloidal suspension may be added to the oil. The catalyst may consist of turnings or filings of iron, steel, copper, and nickel, or the metal may be used in the form of sheets, rods, tubes, or wires ; or the wall of the chamber 14 or conduit may act as a catalyst; or the reaction products may be 'bubbled through molten metal.
