Abstract
271,545. Portham, R. S., and Tangential Dryers, Ltd. Feb. 17, 1926. Separators.-Suspended particles such as oil and water are removed from steam by changing its velocity of flow, causing it to impinge on a body having a multiplicity of points, and finally giving it a rotary motion. The steam passing down a tube 12, which may be a Venturi tube, impinges on a mass 33 of thin pointed wires set vertically suspended matter adheres to the wires and falls into the funnel 34 which is adjustable by a screw 36. The steam passes laterally out through the wires and upwards between cones 22, 23 separated by a ring of vanes 14 which give it a rotary motion. Further material is thus separated with the aid of ribs 20 in the wall. In a modification, the steam after impinging on the wire separator passes through a tube to a second wire separator and thence laterally through a series of vertical scroll plates to which the suspended matter adheres, afterwards falling to the bottom of the casing where it is removed by a pivoted discharge pipe, the adjustment of which varies the depth to which the separated material can collect.
