Abstract

273,475. Keith & Blackman Co., Ltd., J., and Keith, G. June 18, 1926. Density separators. - A dust separator has a vortex chamber F with a tangential inlet A set obliquely to the axis of the apparatus. The vortex chamber merges into a separating chamber M of a larger diameter than that of the chamber F, and the cleaned air passes into the flared end E of the axial outlet tube B. Radial vanes G with scooped lower ends are fixed in the end of the outlet tube to straighten the path of the air. The dust falls into a hopper C for discharge into a dust-box D. The tangential inlet A has an adjustable tongue H to vary the effective area of the inlet. In a modification the vortex chamber is constricted so that a higher speed of rotation is set up in the constricted zone. In another modification the wall at the end of the outlet tube consists of vanes which permit the air to enter in narrow streams and change its direction without shock. In the modified form of separator shown in Fig. 4, air enters at the top and leaves at the bottom through an outlet tube with vanes E as described.
