Grates of open fireplaces, particularly for burning coke and anthracite, are formed of deep bars spaced widely apart and much narrower than the spacing; e.g. for a spacing of #" or more the bars may be #" to ¢" in width. In the grate shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the bars b are inclined and attached at their front ends to a plate a having a vertical front portion a<1>, by means of flanges c, which serve also to space the bars. Flanges d at the rear ends of the bars are received in a channelsection member e. The end flanges may be formed by twisting the ends of the bars. In a modification, the bars are inclined upwardly from the plate a, which may be inclined, as shown, or horizontal. In a further modification, the plate a is dispensed with, the bars being inclined downwardly from the rear and then extending upwardly at the front of the grate. Fig. 5 shows a construction comprising bars b extending below a raised plate a, and from side to side of the grate, by which means ashes are prevented from coming to the front of the hearth: in a modification of this form, the rear part of the fuel-supporting surface may be solid.
