Abstract

Tanks.-In order to prevent evaporation and to minimize fire risk, the surface of a volatile liquid is covered by a number of floats 6, Fig. 1, which may be filled with an inert gas or may contain materials which are ejected on subjection to heat and produce a fire extinguishing blanket. The floats may be of similar shapes in plan, e.g. hexagonal, square, triangular, or circular, and may have a weighted. depending, pyramidal portion and a groove or grooves 11 above the plane of flotation. They may contain extinguishing liquid 21, Fig. 7, into which depends a tube 20 closed by a fusible plug 22. An excess of floats is preferably employed, so that a wedging action is produced as at 12, or a double layer is provided when spherical floats are employed. The tank is provided with means, such as screens, to prevent the floats from entering outlets &c.
