Abstract
269,529. British Celanese, Ltd., (Assignees of Miles, G. W., and Dreyfus, C.). April 14, 1926, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Paper, treating with special materials.-Paper when treated with one or more inorganic acids in the presence of one or more phosphoric acids, especially orthophosphoric acid preferably with the addition of metaphosphoric acid, acquires the property of withstanding the action of sea water. As inorganic acids there may be used monobasic acids such as nitric acid, or dibasic or polybasic acids such as sulphuric acid, ethyl-sulphuric acid, benzene sulphonic acid or para-toluene sulphonic acid; and the esterification may be facilitated by pretreatment of the cellulose &c., for instance with glacial acetic acid containing a small percentage of sulphuric acid, or with orthophosphoric acid with or without a small percentage of sulphuric acid. Contact or catalytic agents may be added to the reaction mixture, for example, there may be added a small quantity of sulphuric acid. The esterification is preferably carried out at low temperatures although higher temperatures may be employed; but it is preferred to work at low temperatures if sulphuric acid has been added as contact agent.
