Heating by electricity. - In electrically-heated boilers with generating elements comprising liquid-containing outer electrodes and inner electrodes dipping into liquid, several outer and inner electrodes are connected in series like battery electrodes, the supply voltage or the voltage of each phase of the supply being distributed over several elements. In a boiler for 3-phase current, six elements d, Fig. 1, are connected in each phase, the outer electrode a of the first element d being connected to the inner electrode i of the second element and so on as shown, or the inner electrodes of the first to the outer electrode of the second and so on, the final electrodes of the threephases being connected together and forming the neutral point. Insulating tubes r coaxial with the elements d may insulate the elements and connect them to a common supply pipe z for each phase, the supply and so the efficiency being regulated by a valve R<1> operated from the exterior of the boiler in an outflow pipe in front of the first element and the three pipes z being supplied from a centrifugal pump p. The tubes r may be of decreasing length corresponding to the voltage drop between the elements and the pipe z. Complete elements d are introduced into the boiler through a manhole and are series-connected within according to the supply voltage. The electrodes a may comprise thin seamless iron tubes. In a modification, short insulating tubes k, Fig. 4, at right angles to the elements d may connect the elements in one phase together and form the common supply pipe.
