Metal polishes for precious metals consist of emery-paste mixed with very voluminous silica of high adsorption capacity obtained by reacting silicon fluoride with a limited amount of water. The silicon fluoride may be reacted with steam or water in the form of a spray, which may be mixed with air. Alternatively, the silicon fluoride may be introduced into a solution of hydrofluosilicic acid which acts as a diluent of the water.
