Abstract

267,375. Coridori, P. June 28, 1926. Joints held by cement and the like.-A submerged tube for maintaining railway and other communication across channels and water-ways consists oi tubular elements or sections each of which consists of an inner sheet-metal cylinder C, strong enough to withstand the pressure of the water above it, surrounded bv a concrete &c. jacket M, and enclosed in another sheet-metal tube D. Each section has I-section iron N and T-section ribs V, the latter being joined as shown in Fig. 3, by chains and tightening-devices to draw the sections together. The sections are jointed by soft and plastic material Q, such as mixture of sand and asphalt or bitumen, set in annular cups at the ends of each section, and the joint in both the inner cylinder C and the outer cylinder D may be closed by rings A, the ends of which bear on packings B in annular cups fromed by rings R. A drainage tube H is formed in the base of the tube. It is closed at both ends, and has inlet and outlet valves for the drainage, which is expelled by compressed air. A saddle-shaped support S is slidably mounted under each section to support and anchor the tube.
