Abstract
369,464. Determining and lowering the head of water around a water-logged site. GLUCKSTEIN, V., 35, High Street, Marylebone, London. May 20, 1931, Nos. 14821 and 18608. [Class 33.] In order to determine and lower the head of water around a water-logged site, a three-branched pipe 5, Fig. 1, is passed through the base of a sump 1 dug in the base of the site ; a valved-branch 10 detachably carrying a sectional gauge-glass 12 is secured to one, 7, of the branches., another, 9, of which is plugged and serves for the removal of obstructions, whilst the third, 8, is fitted with a draw-off valve 13, a pipe 14 communicating with a pump discharging from the sump. The pipes 5, 14 have threaded collars 15, 16 disposed one on each side of a layer of concrete or of asphalt 4 embedded in concrete, the adjacent faces of the collars being corrugated and covered with waterproofing plastic material. The lower end of the pipe 5 rests in a heap 6 of stones &c. In another form, Fig. 2, a metal tank 19 is concreted in position in the sump ; a metal securing strip 20, perforated at 21 and welded to the tank, ensures the formation of an air pocket 22 to retain leakage. The strip 20 instead of being directly keyed in concrete may be keyed in bitumen which is then keyed in concrete.
