Abstract

267,313. Reed, S. A. March 15, 1926. Screw propellers.-Metal air screws with thin blades are forged with a central boss enlargement, the blades being of such thickness that they would deflect at speeds without the compensation of centrifugal forces. The central boss is formed by hot die forging, the blade portions being finished by cold working. An alloy of aluminium or magnesium is the preferred material. The thickness of the blade at one-tenth the length from the root does not exceed one-fiftyfourth of the length. The boss may be bolted or keyed to the engine shaft direct or may be provided with liner 6 of hard metal keyed by keys 12 to the boss and having keyways 9 and an internal cone 8 for fitting on the coned end of the engine shaft. In a modification, the 'liner has integral fins in place of separate keys which slide in keyways in the boss and when in position are pinned. Specifications 163,714, 199,708, 223,838, and 240,594 are referred to.
