Abstract

266,844. Watson & Sons, Ltd., H., and Watson, E. Dec. 16, 1925. Lawn-mowers.-The motor of an electricallydriven lawn-mower having side wheels is mounted within the cutting-cylinder and drives it directly or through gearing. The motor a is supported by hollow sleeves b fixed in the side frames c. The rotary cutter is mounted coaxially on ball bearings e on the sleeves b and is driven from the motor spindle g by pinions f, h and an internally toothed wheel k on one of the discs m of the rotary cutter. A clutch may be provided. Space is left between the blades n of the cutter and the motor a for the escape of cut grass. The ledger blade is carried by pivoted arms so as to be adjustable Land wheels d are mounted on studs w and an adjustable supporting-roller t is provided. Shafts or handles are mounted in sockets on the side frames c. A grass, box may be mounted behind or in front of the rotary cutter. The current is supplied through a long flexible cable led in through one of the sleeves b. A controlling switch is mounted on one of the handles. In a modification one of the discs m is keyed directly to the motor spindle. In another modification the armature of the motor is fixed and the field winding and housing rotate, the cutter blades being mounted on or attached to the housing. The land wheels d may be driven from the spindle g through gearing and clutches.
