Bleaching and washing, processes and materials for.-When bleaching undyed cotton with which has been woven yarns dyed with dyestuffs fast to an alkali and chlorine bleach the preliminary boiling with alkali is effected in the presence of a compound which has a mono-cyclic or di-cyclic quinone-like structure or which is converted into a compound having such structure by heating in alkaline solution: bleeding of the dyestuff (" marking-off") is thereby prevented. Such substances are p.nitrosophenol, o-nitroso-mcresol, benzoquinone, naphthoquinones, and pnitrosodimethylaniline (which yields p-nitrosophenol when boiled with alkali). The heating with alkali may be effected under pressure. Examples are given according to which rolls of unbleached cotton materials having vat-dyed borders are heated under pressure or boiled with caustic soda solution with addition of nitrosophenol, nitroso-m-cresol, or nitrosodimethylaniline, and are then bleached with sodium hypochlorite.
