Universal joints. - A metallic dust-excluding casing or cover of a universal joint having a hollow casing such as 8 comprises an intermediate member 3 having one parti-spherical portion 3<a> engaging a. parti-spherical member 1 fitted to the. casing 8 and another parti-spherical portion 3b engaging a third member 4 slidable on the shaft 9 encircled by the cover. In the type of joint shown, the shaft 9 may be moved inwards of the casing 8, but is normally thrust outwards by a spring 6. The casing shown comprises four members 1 - - 4 preferably of pressed steel. three washers w, w<1>, w<2>, and a spring 5. The member 1 fits over the casing 8 at 1<a>, has a spherical part 1<d>, an annular recess 1<c>, and a flanged central aperture 1<b>. The member 2 fits and may be welded within the aperture 1<b> and has a flange 2<a> adapted to confine the washer w in the recess 1<c>. The oppositely-directed spherical parts 3<a>, 3b of the, floating member 3 rest respectively on the spherical part 1<d> and washer w<1>, which is supported in an annular seat 4a in the member 4. The member 4 is tubular surrounding the shaft 9 and is biased by the spring to press the casing members together. The washer w<2> is strung on the shaft within the member 4 and set between the inner end of that member and the spring 5.
