Abstract

265,818. Hara, S. April 21, 1926. Endless-chain machines for excavating the earth from within bridge piers to sink the latter comprise a base frame 2 to be laid on the pier 36, the frame carrying columns 1 provided with vertical guides on which slides a frame comprising side beams 4 which adjustably supports the bucket chain. The vertical movement is-effected by screws 3 which are driven by worm gearing actuated by chains 31 from lower shafts connected by a shaft 32, one of the lower shafts being driven by a belt 33. The ladder 7 of the bucket chain is extensible, being formed of lengths connected by couplings 8, and is suspended from a screw 6 carried by the beams 4 which also support a polygonal shaft 5 slidably supporting and driving the upper tumbler 10 which drives the bucket chain, members 13 on each side of the tumbler having forked ends 14 engaging the ends of the bucket ladder and the screw 6, the latter being rotated by a hand wheel 15 to move the bucket chain and ladder laterally. The bucket chain is driven by a belt 34 and gearing 35 and delivers spoil to a shoot 18, 18<1>; the tumber 10 has on alternate surfaces projections 17 with one face formed as a trough to guide the spoil. The lower part of the bucket ladder has an attached frame 19 connected by cables 20, 20<1> oppositely wound on drums 21, 21<1> which are simultaneously driven by a hand chain 26 and worm gearing to pivot the bucket ladder about the screw 6.
