Abstract
1291677 Laying underwater pipes SAIPEM SpA 19 April 1971 [9 April 1970] 26694/71 Heading F2P [Also in Division B8] A pontoon mounted piping tensioning device for underwater laying of piping comprises upper and lower tracks 8, 9, mounted on vertical guides 2 for vertical adjustment, each comprising a number of links carrying elastomeric pieces 15 which grip the piping; the tracks are provided with a number of rollers 12 in the region of the piping which are supported by a smaller number of hinged supports 13 so that the angle of parts of the track can be varied. The tracks 8, 9 are mounted on caissons 4, 5, respectively, vertically adjustable between four pairs of supports 2 by means of vertical motor-driven worm screws 24 engaging fixed nuts on the upper caisson 4, and four hydraulic rams 27 acting on the lower caisson 5. The adjustment of the supports 13 is by vertical links 14 connected to the caissons 4, 5. The tracks are driven by electric motors 29 coupled to reversing cylinders 7, and by a control means, e.g. servo-control, the tracks are operated to retain a constant predetermined tension in the piping. Each track link supports a builtup saddle 16 with an arcuate surface having a number of neoprene pieces 15. For pipes of different diameters, different shape saddles 16, according to the curvature, are provided, but the same elastomeric pieces 15 are utilized. The pieces 15 are held in a dovetail socket in each saddle 16.
