A straightening machine for the frames and bodies of motor vehicles consists of a base or table-like structure 11, 12 having its top or working surface arranged at a suitable height and upon which a vehicle to be repaired is positioned and may be secured in place in any suitable manner, one or more carriages or saddle members 17 mounted to slide longitudinally of the base, one or more transverse carriage or saddle members 21 disposed at one or both ends of said base and arranged for slidable travel thereacross, means associated with each carriage member for securing it at a setting, a series of pillars, towers or posts 27 of suitable heights for their purpose each adapted to be affixed or removably affixed to a carriage member 17 or 21, such pillars 27 being formed to receive thereon at one or a series of positions various devices for tensioning, drawing and other working operations, such devices including hydraulic rams, clamping devices, chain guides and the like whereby the distorted metal is stretched and pulled back into shape. The carriages 17, 21 are secured in their adjusted positions by wedge means 20. Opposite side pillars 27 may be linked by an adjustable transverse beam 39 adapted to have lifting means, clamps or the like attached thereto. Hydraulic means may be embodied in the base and/or carriage members to apply movement or tension.
