Abstract

265,745. Guy, H. L., and Metropolitan- Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd. Dec. 23, 1925. Surface condensers. - In a condenser having a nest of tubes 6 passing across the steam space from an inlet header 7 to an outlet header 8, and enclosing an air-withdrawal space 10 free from tubes, the cross-sectional area of the space 10 is not less than 10 per cent of the total cross sectional area enclosed by the tube nest. The space 10 contains a large air-removal trunk 11 having openings 20 and serving as a stay for the tube plates. Air is withdrawn through a pipe 9 leading to openings 15 between radial fins 14 surrounding a closed conical casing 13. Water separated by the fins 14 is drained into the condenser through an opening 16. Alternatively the pipes 9 may be attached directly to the tube-plate. Air-cooling tubes may be arranged in the trunk 11. The nest of tubes 6 may have a star-like or serrated cross-section.
