Abstract
264,633. Uno Co., Ltd., and Benkert, P. B. Nov. 20, 1925. Cooling coffee.-Apparatus for cooling granular or powdered materials, particularly coffee berries after roasting, comprises a rotary drum provided with internal helical or inclined ribs adapted to disperse the material through a current of cooling- air drawn or forced through the drum by a fan, the material being fed into and discharged from the drum at the same end through which the cooling-air enters. The cooling-drum 6 is mounted in a frame supporting at the top a roasting-drum 3, from which the hot coffee is delivered by a shoot 5 to a hopper or hinged door 17 in a fixed wall forming the end of the cooling-drum. The ribs 7 on the drum wall are adapted to convey the material to a front delivery door 26, while the air current tends to draw the material to the opposite end, where a gauze partition 35 arrests all but the husk or "flight" of the coffee berries. The fan 20 is preferably arranged on the drum axis and is belt driven. The drum 6 may be provided with a grooved ring 9 for belt drive, but is preferably driven by a worm wheel gearing with a vertical shaft 28 fitted with a belt pulley 30 at the bottom. The front end of the drum is supported by a spider frame 8, and fits within a fixed end spider frame attached by its boss 14 to a cross frame member serving as a bearing for the drum shaft; the fixed spider frame is covered with perforated material. The drum at the opposite end fits over the end of the annular casing 18 of the fan this casing being continued by a rectangular casing 19 of millboard or the like having an inclined end wall 36 to arrest the " flight." The air may be blown through the drum, or the air trunk 18 may be connected with the inlet of a centrifugal fan. The drum is rotated at a low speed and the fan at a relatively high speed, and the clutch is provided so that the fan may be stopped at the end of the cooling operation, the drum continuing to rotate so that the blades deliver the cooled material to the discharge door. The longitudinal wall of the drum may be perforated, and the drum may be of polygonal form.
