Abstract

264,382. British Celanese Ltd., Addy, C. W., Billing, J., and Halkyard, H. June 4, 1926. Yarns, treating with liquids.-In a process for sizing and dressing yarns, applicable to yarns composed of or containing natural fibres or artificial filaments or fibres, the yarn packages, wound on bobbins, cops, pirns, tubes, spools or the like, are immersed in a solution of sizing or dressing agent in a volatile solvent and then dried by evaporation of the solvent and wound continuously on to hanking frames, bobbins, or the like. The drying may be effected during winding of the yarn on the final carrier or the original sized package may be partly dried before winding. As solvents, water, benzene, toluene, xylene may be used, and solvents that volatilize with difficulty, such as paraffin oil, may be added. As sizing or dressing agents, mixtures of resins or metallic resinates or naphthenates with non- drying oils, fats, waxes and fatty acids such as are described in Specifications 244,947 and 244,979, [both in Class 121, Starch &c.]. are suitable and the treatment may be effected in vacuum. Penetration may be aided by pressure or by vacuum and pressure alternately. The evaporation of the solvent may be effected at ordinary room temperature or by passing the yarn over a hot plate, and air currents may be used.
