Scavengers' carts; tipping-carts.-A vehicle such as a scavenger's cart comprises a tipping body 16 into which refuse &c. is delivered through a hinged door 25 in an elongated hood 21 from a long tipping-bucket 32. The bucket is raised and lowered in guides 27 by gearing con. nected with a power shaft 5 on the vehicle in such a way as to permit separation of driving elements 64, 65 when the body 16 is tipped for emptying. The bucket 32 is pivoted at 36 on a carriage 33 running m the guides 27, and hoisting chains 44 are connected with the bucket at points 45 situated so that the bucket is held against the carriage until the latter engages stops 41 at the top of the guides. Further hauling tips the bucket until the inclined bars 42 on the bucket rest against and seal the edges of the hood. In this position, Fig. 4, weighted levers 112 pivoted at 112a upon the carriage, fall behind stops 113 on the guides 27 and retain the carriage at the top of the guides until released by the weight of the bucket when the latter is lowered. The chains 44 are wound on grooved drums 51 which have a part of reduced diameter so that the bucket moves slowly on approaching its end position. The drums 51 are driven through self-holding worm gear 56, 57, and the power drive is automatically thrown into neutral position when the bucket is tipped and engages a rod 99.
