This invention relates to new and useful improvements in material hauling vehicles and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a garbage disposal unit including a hopper and novel and improved means for conveying garbage or other such material from a loading point to the hopper.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a garbage disposal unit including a hopper having a vertically swingable closure on its upper wall and a mechanism for raising the closure in response to the lifting of a carriage for dumping material in the carriage into the hopper.
Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a carriage tracking on curved guide and a cable attached to the carriage in such a manner as to effect a tipping of the carriage as the carria e engages stops on the guide to permit the dispensing of material in the carriage.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a garbage loading, hauling and dispensing unit including a hopper having a packing means therein whereby material placed in the hopper may be packed to permit a large quantity of material to be carried by the hopper.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a material loading, hauling and dispensing unit including a pair of curved guides supporting a carriage, a lifting cable attached to the carriage for raising the carriage to a discharge point and means supported on the guides for guiding and retaining the cable located between the guides.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a garbage disposal unit including a garbaging packing means that is hydraulically actuated.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a garbage disposal unit that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, eflicient and durable in operation, inexpensive to manufacture and install, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the present invention, with parts of the hopper and the vehicle chassis broken away, and showing the carriage raised and tilted toward the hopper with the upper closure of the hopper likewise raised;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view partly in section and partly in elevation to show in detail the structure of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged top plan view of the present invention shown in Figure 1;
Figure 4- is an enlarged transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 4-4 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 55 of Figure 2;
Figure 6 is an enlarged vertical sectional view showing the closure actuating rod and the guide means therefor; and,

Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral 10 represents a vehicle or truck the bed E2 of which supports an upstanding dump bed or hopper I4 having a pair of rear closure members It and an upper wall IS. An opening 20 is provided in the forward end of the upper wall l8 whereby material may be dumped into the hopper.
The forward end wall 22 of the hopper H3 is provided with an upwardly and forwardly inclined upper portion 24 for a purpose which will later be described in more detail.
A pair of downwardly and forwardly curved, channel shaped, guide tracks 26 and 2B are mounted at the forward portion of the truck 10. The lower and forward ends of the guide tracks are secured to the forward bumper 33 of the truck by any suitable means and the lower ends of the guide tracks terminate in wheel seats 32.
The upper and rear ends of the guide tracks are rigidly secured to the upwardly and forwardly inclined end portions M of uprights 33 mounted on the bed l2.
An elongated carriage 38 is associated with the guide tracks 26 and 3!]. This carriage includes an opening 49 in one end for the placement of material into or the removal of material from the carriage. A pair of ears 42 depend from the carriage intermediate the ends of the carriage and support an axle 44 on which there is mounted a pair of wheels 46 that track in the guide tracks 26, 28.
Rear guide wheels 48 also depend from the carriage 33 and ride in the guide tracks and further support the carriage during raising and '8 lowering the carriage on the guide tracks. This means consists of a cable drum or winch 50 moun ed on the bed I2 beneath and rearwardly of "he upper ends of the guide tracks. A cable is wound on the drum d and is attached. to a bracket 5 mounted on the carriage.
A plurality of spaced parallel, horizontally extending reinforcing and strengthening bars 58 are terminally secured to the guide tracks. The central portion of the bars 55 support guide pulleys 53 over which is trained the cable 52 to restrict lateral movement of the cable during raising and lowering of the carriage.
An upper horizontal shaft carried by the portions supports a pulley 62 for the cable 52. A lower horizontal shaft 64 is disposed rearward 1y of the shaft overlies the drum 50 and su ports a pulley 56 also receiving the cable 52.
Stop blocks '58 are mounted at the upper ends of the guide tracks forwardly of the shaft 65 as shown best in Figure 2 of the drawings. The stop blocks 68, the pulleys 62 and fit, the wheels it and the drum 5d are so mounted as to effect a tippingof the open end of the carriage into the opening 26 as the carriage is raised until the wheels 46 engage the stop blocks as shown in Figure 2.
An upper closure it is hinged as at I2 to the upper wall of the hopper and normally closes the opening 2%. There is, however, a means responsive to the raising of the carriage for engaging and raising the closure it so that the carriage may tip into the opening 2Q for dumping its lead. This mean comprises a pair of horizontal rock shafts "i journaled for rotation or reinforcing webs it depending from the upper ends of the guide tracks. The outer ends of the rock shafts it support laterally projecting arms '38 that are pivoted to the forward ends of actuat ing rods 89.
The rear bifurcated ends 82 of the rods 88 engage arms as projecting from the hinge means l2 so that as the arms l3 swing rearwardly, the rods 86 will also move rearwardly to raise the closure E8. The inner ends of the shafts M support contact fingers 85 that will engage the axle during raising of the carriage 38 whereby the arms E8 will swing rearwardly to thereby raise the closure IE3. As the carriage 38 is lowered, the closure 7 2 will gravitate to its closed position and the fingers 86, will be positioned to be again engaged by the axle as the carriage is again raise Means is provided for packing material entering the hopper and for urging material in the forward end of the hopper toward the rear closures I6. This means consists of a plurality of vertical support plates 88 fixed to the wall 22. The upper ends of the plates 8?} support hori zontal sleeves 5% that are interdigitated with sleeves S2 at the lower end of a pressure member 94. A pivot 96 extends through the side walls of the hopper and through all of the sleeves 9c,
A pair of pump cylinders 28 are pivoted within the hopper and include piston rods I53 that are pivoted to the pressure member 36. When the rods I69 are extended, as shown in Figure 2, the pressure member 94 rests against the portion 24 to permit material entering the hopper through the opening 29 to ride downwardly upon the pressure member 94.
A transverse guide member I32 is supported on the upper wall It adjacent the rear edge of the opening 2:! and includes a vertically inclined 4 opening I04 that registers with a transverse slot I06 in the upper wall IS. A plate I08 is slidably received in the opening I04 and the slot I06 for movement into and out of the hopper.
A pair of pump cylinders I I G are pivoted to the side walls of the hopper and include piston rods H2 that are pivoted to the upper portion of the plate I68.
The pumps cc and Ill! are connected to a source of fluid pressure on the truck ID by conduits that extend through a valve housing H4. A valve IIG controls the flow of fluid into the cylinders 98 and a valve H8 controls the flow of fluid into the cylinders IIG, whereby the pistons I86, I I2 may be selectively extended or retracted.
A housing I28 is mounted on each of the portions 34 and each housing includes removable end caps I22. The housings are slotted to slidably receive the rods fill and upper and lower roller units I24 and I26 are mounted in the housings and are urged by upper and lower springs i228 and I35 against the rods 80. as shown in Figure 6. By adjusting the caps I22 a predetermined pressure on the rods 89 will be required before the rods 6*) will move longitudinally.
In practical use of the present invention, the drum 55 is rotated by the power plant of the truck to lower the carriage whereupon the wheels 43 will enter the seats 32 as shown in dotted l nes in Figure 1. In this position, the open end of the carriage will face upwardly to permit material to be placed into the carriage.
The drum 58 is then reversed to raise the carriage. As the carriage approaches the hopper I4, the axle 44 engages the fingers $5 to rotate the shafts I and thereby raise the closure Ill. The wheels 3S engage the stop blocks G8 to tip the carriage into the opening as shown in Figure 1 whereby the material in the carriage will enter the hopper.
Material entering the hopper is packed, when the plate I {I8 is lowered and when the member 9 1 is moved toward the plate I08 to compress material between the plate ms and the pressure member 94.
The plate N38 is raised and the member 96 moved rearwardly to force material toward the rear of the hopper where it may be removed at a disposal point upon opening of the closure members I I5.
The guide tracks are located at the sides of the truck and are relatively small so as not to obstruct the truck drivers vision.
The tapered box or carriage construction is quite important as it assures a rapid and clean discharge of material therefrom.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehendecl by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new 15:
l. A garbage disposal unit comprising a vehicle having a dump bed thereon, a pair of downwardly and forwardly curved guide tracks mounted on the vehicle and having their upper ends disposed adjacent the bed, a carriage having wheels tracking on said guide tracks, means for selectively raising and lowering said carriage, said bed including an upper wall having an opening therein for receiving material from the car riage, a closure for the opening, an actuating rod slidably carried by one of said guide tracks and connected to said closure, said carriage including an axle supporting said wheels, a horizontal shaft journaled for rotation on one of said guide tracks, a contact arm mounted on one end of said shaft and positioned between said guide tracks to be engaged by said axle during raising of said carriage, and a link on the other end of said shaft pivoted to said rod to impart sliding movement to said rod for raising the closure as the shaft is rotated by the axle engaging the contact arm.
2. A garbage disposal unit comprising a vehicle having a dump bed thereon, a pair of downwardly and forwardly curved guide tracks mounted on the vehicle and having their upper ends disposed adjacent the bed, a carriage having wheels tracking on said guide tracks, means for selectively raising and lowering said carriage, said bed including an upper wall having an opening therein for receiving material from the carriage, a closure for the opening, an actuating rod slidably carried by one of said guide tracks and connected to said closure, means carried by one of said guide tracks and connected to said rod for imparting sliding movement to said rod for raising said closure, said last-named means including an arm extending upwardly beyond the guide tracks being operated by said carriage during raising of said carriage, and means guiding the sliding movement of said rod, said guiding means including a vertically disposed housing having a pair of registering slots slidably receiving said rod, and upper and lower spring urged rollers within the housing and biased against said rod.

A garbage disposal unit comprising a vehicle, a hopper mounted on said vehicle and including a rear closure, said hopper also including an upper wall having an opening therein, a pair of downwardly and forwardly carried guide tracks mounted on said vehicle and curving downwardly from the opening in the upper wall of said hopper, an upper closure hinged to said upper wall for vertical swinging movement and normally closing said opening, a carriage including wheels riding on said guide tracks and an axle joining the wheels, means mounted on said vehicle and connected to said carriage for selectively raising and lowering the carriage, means connected to said upper closure and including an upstanding arm actuated by the axle of said carriage during the raising of the carriage for raising the upper closure, stop means at the upper ends of said guide tracks for engaging said wheels, said carriage being overbalanced at one of its ends to permit tipping of the carriage toward the opening upon engagement of said wheels with said stop means, and means carried by the hopper for packing material entering the hopper through the opening and for urging material within the hopper toward the rear closure.

A garbage disposal unit comprising a vehicle, a hopper mounted on said vehicle and including a rear closure, said hopper also including an upper wall having an opening therein, a pair of downwardly and forwardly curved guide tracks mounted on said vehicle and curving downwardly from the opening in the upper wall of said hopper, an upper closure hinged to said upper wall for vertical swinging movement and normally closing said opening, a carriage including wheels riding on said guide tracks, means mounted on said vehicle and connected to said carriage for selectively raising and lowering the carriage, means connected to said upper closure and actuated by said carriage during the raising of the carriage for raising the upper closure, stop means at the upper ends of said guide tracks for engaging said wheels, said carriage being overbalanced at one of its ends to permit tipping of the carriage toward the opening upon engagement of said wheels with said stop means, a vertically swingable pressure member mounted in said hopper beneath said opening for urging material entering the hopper toward the rear closure, and a vertically slidable packer plate movable into and out of the hopper and cooperating with said pressure member to permit the packing of material entering the hopper.

A garbage disposal unit comprising a vehicle, a hopper mounted on said vehicle and including a rear closure, said hopper also including an upper wall having an opening therein, a pair of downwardly and forwardly curved guide tracks mounted on said vehicle and curving downwardly from the opening in the upper wall of said hopper, an upper closure hinged to said upper wall for vertical swinging movement and normally closing said opening, a carriage including wheels riding on said guide tracks, means mounted on said vehicle and connected to said carriage for selectively raising and lowering the carriage, a slidable rod attached to said upper closure for raising the upper closure, a vertically swingable arm mounted on one of said guide tracks and pivoted to said rod, means carried by said one of said guide tracks slidably supporting said rod, means attached to said arm and actuated by said carriage to swing the arm during raising of the carriage, and means mounted on said hopper for packing material entering the hopper through said opening and for urging material entering the hopper away from the opening and toward the rear closure.

A garbage disposal unit comprising a vehicle, a hopper mounted on said vehicle and including a rear closure, said hopper also including an upper wall having an opening therein, a pair of downwardly and forwardly curved guide tracks mounted on said vehicle and curving downwardly from the opening in the upper wall of said hopper, an upper closure hinged to said upper wall for vertical swinging movement and normally closing said opening, a carriage including wheels riding on said guide tracks, means mounted on said vehicle and connected to said carriage for selectively raising and lowering the carriage, a slidable rod attached to said upper closure for raising the upper closure, a vertically swingable arm mounted on one of said guide tracks and pivoted to said rod, means carried by said one of said guide tracks slidably supporting said rod, means attached to said arm and actuated by said carriage to swing the arm during raising of the carriage, and means mounted on said hopper for packing material entering the hopper through said opening and for urging material entering the hopper away from the opening and toward the rear closure, said means for selectively raising and lowering said carriage including a cable drum on said vehicle, a cable on said drum and connected to said carriage, a plurality of reinforcing and strengthening bars terminally attachedto said guide tracks, and-pulleys onsaid bars receiving said; tcable.
