Abstract
263,102. Meyer-Sansboeuf Ges., A. Dec. 21, 1925, [Convention date]. Yarns, treating with liquids; fibres, treating.- A process for protecting vegetable textile materials such as cotton, artificial silk, flax, hemp, jute, from the effects of chemicals which destroy cellulose and for increasing their strength consists in subjecting the material to three successive baths having a tanning action, a mordanting action, and an oiling action respectively, the tanning bath containing a suitable wetting agent and the oiling bath being a solution or emulsion of the oil in a suitable solvent containing a ketone or an aldehyde, the materials being subsequently dried at the ordinary temperature in a ventilated room. As wetting agents may be used a mixture of Turkey red oil, pyridine and tetrachlorethane, a naphthalene sulphonic acid esterified with isopropyl alcohol or like substance, tetrakarnit or necal, the tanning agent being catechu. For mordanting, metal salts which precipitate tannic acid are used and lead acetate and potassium bichromate are mentioned as examples. The oily bath may consist of an alcoholic emulsion of linseed oil, or a solution thereof in tetrahydronaphthalene to which is added paraldehyde or acetone. The process is applicable to loose fibres, yarns, webs, or the like, and the product is stable to water, sea water, liquors containing salts, dilute acids particularly organic, and to ultra-violet rays.
