Abstract

262,901. Johnson, J. Y., (Badische Anilin & Soda Fabrik.) Nov. 5, 1925. Charging and discharging.-Solid materials are fed into, or removed from, vessels in which gases or liquids are maintained at a high pressure of 100 atmospheres or over, by forcing them in known manner through a tube or cylinder in connection with the vessel in the form of a compressed body which tightly closes the tube or cylinder and prevents the escape of gas &c. from the vessel. The solids are preferably of a soft and slightly caking character, and the formation of the gas-tight body may be assisted by adding to the solids a substance which will cause the solids to cake together to form a tight core. As shown, Fig. 1, the solid material in the form of powder or grains is contained in a hopper B, and is fed through a tube D at the upper part of the high-pressure vessel A by means of a piston C reciprocated by a crank-shaft. On the forward movement of the piston, a portion of the loose material within the tube D is added and compressed to the already formed core or stopper E, the whole moved forward and the foremost part of the stopper introduced into the vessel. When the material in the hopper is not in a condition to secure a gas-tight stopper, a layer or sheet F of gas-tight material is introduced at each forward stroke of the piston so that the stopper E contains a number of gas-tight sheets as shown in Fig. 3. The layers or sheets F may consist of rubber, paper, cardboard, metal, &c. A suitable guide may be arranged inside the vessel A near the entrance of the stopper to break off the end of the stopper. The tube D may be slightly conical with the smaller end towards the piston. The method is applicable for introducing soft coal, lignite, &c. into a vessel for being heated therein in the presence of a gas containing hydrogen and being converted into liquid fuels by a hydrogenating process. Specification 1409/04 is referred to.
