Press-type ironing-machines in which the press head is moved manually into light contact with the buck and having power means for applying heavy pressure, an arm 7, depending from the head lever, is connected at its lower end to one of a pair of toggle links 24, 25, which are partially straightened by the manual closing and are completely straightened by a motor operating a shaft 19. Simultaneously the motor causes a hookshaped member 28, pivoted at 27, to swing and lock the toggle by engaging the knuckle pin 26. One hand of the operator manipulates the switch for switching in the motor and the other hand holds the press head down until the toggle is locked.
