Symmetrical diarylguanidines are prepared by reacting with two or more molecular proportions, of an arylamine on one molecular proportion of a salt of an isothiourea-ether, The products possess therapeutical properties. According to the examples, (1) S-ethylisothiourea hydrobromide or S-methylisothiourea, hydroiodide or S-benzylisothiourea hydrochloride is heated with aniline in excess in the presence of a little was until mercaptan is no longer evolved; on rendering the solution alkaline, sym-diphenylguanidine separates out; (2) sym-di-(o-methoxyphenyl)-guanidine hydrobromide is obtained in a similar way by heating S-ethylisothiourea hydrobromide with o-anisidine.
