Abstract

261,697. Matthews Corporation, W. N. Nov. 19, 1923, [Convention date]. Filtering.-In spraying-devices for coating purposes, in which a spray-gun is associated with an air line, a portable separator for oil, water and grit is placed between the air line and the gun, the separator comprising a chamber containing absorbent material and a baffle retaining the material in place and causing air to pass in a tortuous path therethrough. Any condensed oil or water in the air line is thus removed from the air before reaching the spraying elements. In Fig. 1, L indicates a permanent air line which may be provided with a separator S to remove oil and water at line temperature, and much of the grit. Oil, water. &c. which may condense in the flexible air line F, and grit, is removed by the separator P, forming part of the spray-gun G. The separator P comprises a cup 11, having a nipple 13 to which the flexible line F is attached, and contains finely divided material such as wood shreds, hair, shredded asbestos, &c.. A threaded cap 17, Figs. 1 and 2, fits on the cup 11, and has a resilient gasket 19 which holds in place a baffle disc 21 (see also Figs. 3 and 4). The outer surfaces of the cup and cap are recessed for gripping, so that they may be easily separated for cleaning purposes.
