Abstract

Heating and cooling electrolytes; cells.-Tubes or coils of tubing for the passage of hot or cold fluid are arranged across the ends of a cell adjacent to the ends of the electrodes and in a plane at right-angles to that of the electrodes. The apparatus shown in Fig. 1 comprises flattened tubes b, c joined together at one end, this end being supported by a strap (not shown) depending from the top of the cell. At the opposite end the tube c is connected to a delivery pipe f and to the tube b to a discharge pipe g. Liquid is supplied to a funnel h on the pipe f by a cock j from a, pipe k supported by standards k<1> above the cell. The discharge pipe g passes through the top of the cell and is connected to a vertical pipe m outside the cell terminating above a funnel n on the upper end of a pipe o leading to a discharge conduit p. The air gaps at h and n ensure insulation of the cell from the external water system. The sections of the pipe k are preferably insulated from one another by glass sleeves l. In a modification, the tubes b, c pass through the sides of the cell and are welded thereto or formed integrally therewith. In another modification, the tubes b, c are formed or welded to the end walls of a gas collecting bell arranged around the electrodes or in a depending skirt of the bell. In the cell shown in Fig. 5, the heating or cooling passages are formed by the engagement of troughs t formed in the skirt of the bell with similar troughs in a metal strip v welded to the skirt.
