Rolling.-A billet from a heating furnace is passed through two sets of roughing roll trains 1 - - 4 and 5 - - 8 to a Y-transfer with skewed conveyer rolls 24, whence it is passed through a non- continuous intermediate mill 9, 10, 11 and then through stands of finishing rolls 12 - - 15, each stand of rolls in the intermediate train being driven faster than its predecessor. Any of the stands of the finishing rolls 12 - - 15 may be cut out and some may be so cut out as to allow the formation of free loops 32 in the material. Each group of rolls is driven by an adjustable speed motor, the motor 22 driving both the train 5 - - 8 and the non-continuous train 9, 10, 11. The rolls may have rows of differently shaped passes.
