Abstract

293,229. American Rolling Mill Co., and Tytus, J. B. Sept. 1, 1927. Addition to 256,798. Rolling.-The process described in the parent Specification is applied to the production by continuous rolling from a single piece of long metal strips, the piece formed in each stand, at least of the finishing rolls, having a convex contour C, which is more convex than the piece formed in the succeeding stand. The width and gauge of the finished strip are similar to the work produced in sheet mills. The stands of rolls 1 - - 9 are driven by D.C. motors 10 through reducing gears 11, the current being derived from the plant A so that when the relative speeds of the various motors have been correctly adjusted a single element may be employed to adjust the speeds of all the motors simultaneously. The blank is heated in a furnace 12, severed by shears 13, and passed between the roll stands along shoots 13<1> which may be furnaces such as 14. Flying shears 15 may bo provided to sever any defective pieces. The last four or five stands preferably consist of small rolls 18, backed by larger rolls 19 or, alternatively, a three-high stand with one small middle roll may be used. Water and gas pipes may be laid to the roll stands for cooling the rolls or for maintaining them at a constant temperature.
