Abstract

259,271. Power, R. F. June 9, 1925. S e a r c h lights; lantern Shutters and screens; lighting, systems of. - A longrange high-power lamp for producing temporary blindness or a blinding light, particularly in warfare, is provided with means for successively projecting differentcoloured light beams and with an occulting-device for producing an intermittent projection. The duration of each flash and of each period of occultation may be gradually lengthened to correspond with the slower opening and closing of the pupil of the eye, e.g. from two seconds to four seconds in the case of the flash and from three seconds to five seconds in the case of the occultation. The lamps may be arranged at different points and adapted to be controlled so that light, in some cases of different colours, may be projected successively from different directions on an object, thereby increasing the blinding effect. Mercury vapour lamps may be used alternately with neon lamps for obtaining different-coloured beams. In one form, a projecting lamp is provided with a rotatable cylindrical frame 14, Fig. 1, carrying three glass screens 15, 16, 17, e.g. green, red, and clear, mounted on rollers and rotated by a hand wheel through toothed gearing. The light may be shut off by a Venetian-blind type of shutter 10. In a modification, the rotatable frame is provided with two coloured screens and a connecting opaque portion and the lamp reflector is arranged within the drum and supported from the side of the lamp casing. In a second form, the lamp is provided with an iris diaphragm 30. Fig. 3, dispersion lenses 31, 32 operated by a hand-wheel 33, pivoted shutters 10 operated by a bell-crank lever 11, and coloured pivoted screens, e.g. red screens 25 and green screens 26, operated through handles 27, 28 and a connecting-rod. The lamps may be swung in a vertical plane. Specification 162,666 is referred to.
