Abstract
259,012. Crick, W. Sept. 15, 1925. Fastening. - In shoes having a strap or bar passing over the instep, the bar is so constructed as to be extensible or capable of yielding, being controlled by elastic means combined therewith, which extend from side to side of the shoe and may be made adjustable to vary the tension on the length and be detachably secured. In the form shown in Fig. 1, an elastic strip 4 is enclosed within the strap 1, which is formed in one with the upper at one end, the other end passing through a slot 3 in the upper. The elastic strip may pass between the upper and the lining and be secured by buckles 12. In a modification, both ends of the bar form part of or are secured to the shoe and the centre portions are provided with a telescopic joint which may be covered with an ornamental buckle. In a second modification, both ends of the strap are free, the elastic strip serving to secure it to the shoe. In this form the ends of the strap are reinforced by enclosed metal plates. Fig. 5 shows a preferred construction of the strap 10 which encloses between a strip 6 and a lining 7 a spiral wire or other flexible tube 9 through which an endless rubber band 8 passes. The band may be secured, as shown in Fig. 6, by passing its ends through slots 15, or 17, 18, and inserting a leather &c. bar 16. In Fig. 7, a metal clip 8<a> is employed to secure the ends of the endless band to the shoe upper. Where a single strip of elastic material is employed, this may be secured by passing it through slots in the lining of the shoe, and where a buckle, secured to the upper and situated between the upper and lining, is used, a flap may be formed in the lining to allow access to the buckle. The bar may be replaced by, or made to represent a strap with or without a buckle and preferably non-adjustable, it being rendered extensible or yielding in the manner described above.
