Hardening the ground.-A casing tube with a base ring d is positioned in a borehole &c. and a metallic packing ring e, formed as in Fig. 7, is then dropped on to the base ring and expanded as by hammering by a reciprocating tube; soft packing such as lead wool, hemp, &c. g is then positioned and rammed, and further rings and soft packings positioned and rammed as required. Cement &c. is then placed in the casing tube and pressure applied thereto.
