Abstract
A burner 1 comprises a primary combustion chamber 2 with means 4 for adjusting the volume of the primary combustion chamber, a means 3 of delivering solid fuel to the primary combustion chamber, and a secondary combustion chamber 18. The primary combustion chamber may have a grate (6, Fig. 5) with the means for adjusting the volume of the primary combustion chamber formed by a further grate (7, Fig. 5). The secondary combustion chamber may also have a grate (19, Fig. 6). The primary combustion chamber may be directly above the secondary combustion chamber so that during combustion, solid fuel from the primary combustion chamber passes into the secondary combustion chamber. The burner may have a removeable ash tray 21 which retains fully combusted solid fuel. The burner is suitable for burning biomass fuel and may comprise an induction chamber 22 to extract heat to a connected heat load such as a water boiler, space heater, or oven.
Description
Solid Fuel Burner
The present invention relates to a solid fuel burner which uses solid fuels and more specifically to biomass burners.
Conventional heating systems that utilise a solid fuel such as biomass are generally formed of two main components - the first component being the heating component such as but not limited to water boilers/heaters, outdoor patio heaters, space heaters for both domestic and commercial use, barbecue grills, ovens and cookers for both domestic and commercial use and the second component being the burner component. The burner component performs the combustion of the fuel in order to provide the required heat for heat emanation from the heating component. The burner can be either automatically operated by a control system or manually operated by an operator.
In typical burner systems fuel is fed into combustion chambers whether automatically or manually operated from the devices external to the combustion chamber by the use of a hopper loaded with fuel for example. This presents problems more generally with regards to manually operated burner units. For manually operable burner units an operator must predetermine the amount of pellets for combustion to heat the boiler or other such heating component over a certain fixed time as the combustion chamber is continually replenished with fresh fuel from the hopper. Should an operator add too little of an amount of solid fuel to the hopper insufficient heat will be generated and more fuel will be required to be added at a later stage. The worst case scenario is that all of the fuel is already combusted during a time of heat demand. Likewise if too much fuel is added to the hopper, the boiler or the like will produce inefficient heat spikes and/or will heat for a longer period of time than would be necessary. Conventional manual burners continue to burn until the fuel supply has combusted. As a result, this produces an inefficient use of energy and can be a costly exercise for an operator over time.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate the problem of energy efficiency in conventional manually operable burner units for heating systems.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a burner for solid fuel comprising: a primary combustion chamber, a means for delivering solid fuel to the at least one combustion chamber and means for adjusting the volume of the primary combustion chamber wherein the burner for solid fuel further comprises a secondary combustion chamber.

The chute 3 for delivering solid fuel to the combustion chamber 2 is substantially vertical. The burner 1 for solid fuel comprises an induction chamber 22 for extracting heat from the combustion chamber. The induction chamber 22 guides the heat to the connected heat load. The burner 1 when attached to the heat load uses natural draw to create a clean and intense burn with high efficiency producing minimal ash. The flames are drawn horizontally through the outlet port of the induction chamber into the heat load apparatus. When running at operational temperatures the burner 1 uses preheated air through an air intake which also incorporates the second combustion chamber grate 19. This aids the burner to completely burn the fuel which contributes to the high operating efficiency of the burner 1. Ash then discharges through the second combustion chamber grate 19 into the ash tray 21.
