Abstract

Tone-arms; tone-arm joints; cases. - In a gramophone in which the usual horn is dispensed with, the tone-arm S is supported on a platform 1 through the centre of which the mouth of the tone-arm projects slightly, opening into a sound distributing chamber having lateral walls 4 consisting mainly of fabric. The tone-arm is mounted, in the construction shown in Fig. 1, by providing it with an adjustable collar 11 resting loosely on a ring 10 having a curved bearing face. The hole through which the end of the tone-arm passes is chamfered, so that by adopting this method of mounting, the tone-arm can be tilted considerable when required. Fig. 4 shows an alternative construction in which the tone-arm is pivoted in a bracket 20, which is swivelled in a vertical post. The open end of the tone-arm in this case passes through a curved slot 22 in the platform. A sound-modifying damper at the mouth of the tone-arm consists of a disc and cone of cotton 13 mounted on a wire frame 14. This is bent as shown at 15, Fig. 2, and has a handle 17 for adjusting the position of the damper relatively to the orifice. The cone may be separate from the disc of cotton, and fixed in the mouth of the tone-arm. Specification 257,149 is referred to.
