Description
UNITED S'llltiltl QEFFICE.
TONE-ARIE BASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 1920.
Application filed January 14, 1920. Serial No. 351,274.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ATTILIO RnGULUs lirici-toerq a citizen of Brazil, and a resident of West Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and uselul Tone-Arm Base, 0i which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. y
This invention relates to talking machines, and particularly to an improved tone arm and base which is simple and compar tively cheap to manufacture, while the same time presenting a structure capable of causing a proper discharge oi the sound.
Another object of the invention is to provide a base and tone arm constructed to permit a free turning movement, while at the saine time presenting a mechanical construction which will not readily get out of order and which will wear for a long time.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section through part of a talking machine, the same disclosing an embodiment ot the invention.
Fig. 2- is a fragmentary sectional view through Fig. 1 on line 2 2.
Fig. 3 is a front view of the base shown in Fig. 1, the same illustrating certain parts or' the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates a casing of a talking machine provided with a base board or section 2 and a cover 3 hinged in any suitable manner so as to readily open and close. The base board 2 is provided with an opening 1, but registers with the lower part of the base 5. Base o is preferably made from metal and is preferably round in cross section, the same being formedwith a flange 6 through which the retaining grooves T project. The upper part of the base preterably slightly tapers, and is oilset at 8 so as to receive the cap 9 in the oiiset portion and gives substantially the appearance or a continuous moving base member to the top of the tone arm 10. rThis tone arm is prefer* ably formed integral with the cap 9 and continually registers with the opening 11 in the base o, whereby the sound may properly pass through the base regardless of the position oli' the tone arm. A liller block 12 1s provided in the upper part of the base 5, said block being termed integral with the base 5, or rigidly secured in place in any desired manner. Block 12 is formed with an inclined face 13 set in such a position as to tace the opening 11 whereby it acts as a deflector for the sound waves. ln addition to acting as a deliector the block 12 acts as a support for the tone arm, the action being through bearing pin le rigidly secured in any desired manner to the top of'cap 9. As shown in Fig. 1, the top of cap 9Vis provided with an enlargement 15, in which the upper end ot pin 14 is fitted, the same being preferably cast in place. The lower end of the pin 14 is pointed and lits at the lower end in socket 16 in the block 12, said socket having a tapering bottom whereby there is a pointed support for the cap 9 and tone arm 10. it will be noted that the cap 9 is slightly larger than the upper part of the base 5, whereby the tone arm 10 may move upwardly and downwardly freely within certain limits and thereby answer the usual requirements while the arm is permitted a tree action in its back and forth movement as it passes over a record.
What l claim is:
l. A tone arm and base comprising a base member, a tone arm provided with a cap loosely fitting over the base member, said base member having an opening so that the sound may freely pass from the tone arm into the base member, and a pivotal pin engaging the cap and the upper part ott the base member acting as a support for the cap and tone arm, said pin being provided with a substantially pointed end for permitting a free swinging movement of the tone arm.
2. A combined tone arm and base conirising a tone arm provided with a cap having an opening in the side, a hollow base provided with an opening in one side adapted to register with the opening in said cap, said base being formed with a contracted upper part over which the cap loosely fits, said base having a socket in the upper part and a supporting pin connected with the cap engaging the base at the bottom of said socket.
3. A combined tone arm and base c01n prising a tone arm provided with a cap, a base having a restricted upper part loosely fitting Within the cap, a iller block arranged Within said base formed with a 5 socket in the upper part and an inclined lower face positioned to face the tone arm, and means projecting from the cap and engaging the bottom of said socket for supporting said Cap so as to permit a ree swinging movement of the cap and tone l0 arm.
