Be it known that I, ERLE H. HAND,' a citizen of the United States, residing at Stapleton, borough of Richmond,'State of 6 New York, have invented a new and useful Balance Beam for Tone Arm of Talking Machines and the like, of which the following is a specification.
' My invention consists of a novel construction of an articulated tone arm provided with novel counter-balancing devices, the sound passages in the tone arm being straight or rectilinear and means being provided for accurately balancing or positioning the tone arm member carrying the sound box with respect to the main tone arm body and the record being played, whereby the weight of the sound box can be delicately and accurately adjusted with respect to the groove of the record being played,
so that substantially a predetermined calculated pressure or contact can be had between the stylus and the sound reproducing groove of the. record irrespective of whether the same be of the hill and dale or the laterally undulating type, whereby an improved reproduction of sound will be obtained and the life of the record prolonged.
, It further consists of a novel construction of counterbalancing devices and locking devices carried by an articulated tone arm of the general character above referred to.
It further consists of novel means for forming a tight joint or seal between the various coacting elements of my device, whereby all play or lost motion between the-parts is dispensed with so that there is no leakage or emission of .the reproduced sounds except through the larger end of the tone arm.
It further consists of a novel construction of balance beam, ball bearings therefor and standards provided with pivot points engagingtrunnions carried by said balance beam, so that friction is reduced to a minimum and a very eflective and quickly adjusted device is produced for the purpose intended.
My invention further consists of a novel attachment for a talking machine tone arm, comprising a connection from the tone arm provided with a pendant member which is adapted to be received in a cup provided with ball bearings and with oppositely extending trunnions, in conjunction with standards adapted to be secured in fixed nicely and accurately adjusted with respect to said trunnions, according to requirements.
It further consists of other novel features of construction and advantage, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings, a form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since-it will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention-is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

Referring first to Figures 1 and 3, 1 designates my novel construction of ar ticulated tone arm, the same comprising the enlarged or main body portion 2,which is of tapering or conical form and terminates in the transverse housing 3 in which is mounted the inner or joint member 4 provided with the stepped shoulders 5, whereby a tight joint or seal is eflected between said housing and the outer portion of said joint member.
The manner of assembling the parts will be understood from Figure 3, the open end of the transverse housing when the parts are assembled being closed by the disk or plate 6, which has an inner square or polfigonal recess 7 which engages a similarly s aped projection 8 on the joint member 4.
These parts are held in assembled position b the screw 9 which passes through the ho e 10 and is threaded into the seat 11.
12 designates a counterbalancing device which is composed of the arms'13 and 14 joined by the U-shaped member 15, the terminal 16 of the arm- 14 being secured to the disk 6 by the fastening devices 17, while the end ortion 18 of the arm 12 is secured to the joint member 4 by the fastening devices 19.
The outer end of the arm 13 carries the housin 20 through which passes the spring presse pin 21, whose end engages one of the seats 22 in the collar 23 mounted on the strai ht front ortion 24 of the tone arm, whic is provided with the elbow 25 to which is attachedthe sound box 26 carrying the stylus 27 of the usual construction, it being apparent that the sound passages in the members 2 and 24 are straight or rectilinear.
The arms 13 and 14 are provided with the weights or counterbalancing devices 28 and 29, which are held in position by set screws or the like.
It will be apparent that one of the arms as 14 and its weight 29, may be omitted if desired.
The inner end of the tubular portion 24 is provided with the outwardly deflected terminalflan e 30 against which is screwed reference indicate the end of t e outer sleeve 31, the inner portion of said' sleeve being exteriorly threaded and engaging the internal threads of the joint member 4 as will be understood from Figures 3 and 6.
The outer portion of the sleeve 31 is enlarged or bell-shaped, as indicated at 32, whereby a pocket or chamber 34 is provided which contains the spring 33, one end of said spring bearing against the collar 23 and the opposite end of said spring bearing against the bottom of the pocket 34 as will be understood from Fi ures 2 and 3.
as seen in detail in Fi ure 10, said sections comprising the curve members 37 which have the cars 38 through which pass the clamping screws 39, said curved portions 37 carrying the inclined arms 40 through the upper ends of which pass the pins 41 whose inner ends press against the seats 42 at the end of the bell sha ed member 32, as will be understood from igure 6.
The pin 41 is contained in a housing 43 carried by the arms 40 which containsthe spring 44 whose forward end bears against the transverse pin 45, carried by the pin 41, whereby the inner end of said pin 41 is pressed tightly against the seat 42.
In Figure 6, I have shown the curved portions 37 as mounted upon'the interposed sleeve 46 against which presses one end of the spring 33 so that it will be seen that all play or lost motion between the parts will be effectively taken up.
In the construction seen in Figures 7 and 8, I have shown the rear portion 47 of the tone arm 48, as being in threaded engagement with the joint member 49 which is rotatably mounted in the transverse housing 50, which is cut out as indicated at 51 so as to give the requisite amount of play to said tone arm.
The joint member 49 is assembledwith respect to the housing 50 in substantially the same manner as already described with respect to Figure 3 and its end portions 52 and 53 have secured thereto the; arms 54 and 55, which are connected by the transverse member 56 forming a U- aped structure, said arms 54 and 55 sup rting the counterbalancing devices 57 an 58 respectively, the

The joint member 49 is provided with a curved wall or cut away portion, as indicated at 60, Figure 8, so that a direct communication is had between the tone arm 48 and the passage 61 in the upright member 62.
The straight tubular member 63 of the tone arm is provided with the outwardly deflected flange 64, against which is screwed the inner end of the exteriorly threaded sleeve 65, the threaded end of the sleeve engaging the interiorly threaded tone arm 48, as will be understood from Figure 9.
The sleeve 65 terminates in the bell shaped end 66, containing the spring chamber 67 in which the spring 68 is contained, the outer end of said spring bearing against the collar 46 which carries the clamps and their adj uncts 36 of the same construction as already described with respect to Figure 6.
It will beobvious that the construction seen at the left of Figures 7 and 9 e'fl'ectively prevents any play or lost motion between the parts.
In the construction seen in Figures 11 and 12, I have shown the tone arm 69 as being provided with a clamp composed of the up per member 70 and the lower member 71, which are secured together by a screw 72, said upper member being provided with the hook-73, which is engaged by the link 74, which passes through the eye of the balance beam 76, whose outer end carries the counterbalance 77 which is secured in the ilesired position by the set screw 78 or the The construction and manner of assembling the balance beam 76 will be understood from Figures 14 and 15, said beam having the hole 79 therethrough, through which passes the bolt 80, said bolt passing first through a washer 81, then through the hole 79,, then through the ball guide 82, below which is the cup 83 which contains the balls 84, the lower end of the bolt passing through the washer 85 and being provided with a nut 86 for securing the parts in as sembled position.
The cup 83 is provided with the oppositely extending trunnions 87, whose ends are engaged by the pivot points 88, which pass through the upper ends of the standards 89, whose lower portions or feet 90 are clamped or otherwisesecured to the bottom of the upright 91 of the tone arm 69. r
In Figure 13, I have shown the tone arm 92 as being composed of the articulated members 93 and 94, which are movably connected together at the point 95 by any suitable means, as the joint already described.

The beam 101 at the point-"102 is provided with a ball bearing device, conforming to the structure seen in Figures 14 and 15 already is held in any suit-able position therein by a set screw or the like.
The trunnions of the balance beam 101 seen in Figure 13, are supported by the pivot points 88 carried by the brackets 104, which are mounted upon the upper member 105 of the clamping device which is composed of said upper member and the bottom member 106, secured together by the screws 107. The sound box 108 seen in Figures 11 and 12 is adapted to play any character of record.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An articulated straight tone arm having one portion cylindrical and the other conical, a tone arm joint intermediate said portions, a collar engaging said cylindrical portion and having seats therein, a springpressed pin engaging one of said seats, and an arm having a portion secured to an element of the tone arm joint, one end of said arm carrying said spring-pressed pin and the other end of said arm carrying an adjustable counterbalancing device.
2. In a device of the character stated, an articulated tone arm composed of a conical portion having a transverse cylindrical hous ing formed thereon, a joint member secured in said transverse housing, and a cylindrical portion engaging said joint member, a collar secured to said cylindrical portion and provided with seats, a spring-pressed pin engaging said seats, an arm attached to the joint member contained within said housing, and an adjustable counterbalancing device carried by said arm, said housing having an opening in its forward portion for permit ting the oscillation of said cylindrical portion of the tone arm.

In a device of the character stated, an articulated tone arm, composed of a conical portion terminating in a transverse cylindricalhousing, a joint member carried by said housing, a cylindrical portion secured to said joint member, a collar having seats thereon carried by said cylindrical member, an arm secured to said joint member, an adjustable counterbalance on said arm, a housing car ried by said arm and a spring in said housing having its end adapted to engage in said seats.
