Abstract

257,103. Nordmann, M. J. Sept. 3, 1925. Pencil and like holders and point-protectors; pencil sharpeners.-In a pencil, crayon, or like holder provided with a point-protector, sharpener, and dust-collector, gripping-jaws are arranged in the outer casing to effect both the sharpening and the clamping of the pencil &c. in position. The two jaws 4 are pivoted in the outer casing 1 by means of projections 6, 7 engaging apertures in depressed portions 2 of the wall of the casing. The jaws are each provided with two cutting-edges 5 so that in either direction of rotation of the pencil 9, each jaw has a cutting and a scraping action. The jaws are also provided with gripping-points 8, parts 11 which rest on the pencil, and ends 13 which also act to hold the pencil in position. Springs 14 secured in the casing tend to hold the jaws closed, and extra pressure may be exerted by a slidable cap member 15 provided with a conical inner surface. The front end of the member 15 is formed with an aperture 17 for the passage of the pencil, and with an annular groove containing a felt ring 18 which fits closely on to the pencil to prevent the escape of dust when the pencil is in writing position. A socket 10 for holding pencils of small diameter may be provided.
