Abstract

255,309. Dubilier Condenser Co. (1925), Ltd., (Bockius, W. A.). Dec. 16, 1925. Condensers comprise a pair of sets of interleaved plates each pivoted to swing on different axes and means for conjointly shifting the sets, said means comprising a single rotatable element provided with cam surfaces to shift the sets. A supporting bracket is secured to the panel by a nut 7 and bearing sleeve 9 and supports a pair of fixed spindles 10, 11 about which rotate hollow shafts 17, 20 having arms 16, 19 carrying respectively the two sets of plates 13, 14. As shown in Fig. 2, the plates are square and swing between their axes of rotation, the parallelism of their sides being maintained so that the lapping areas are varied in square uniform progression. The shafts 17, 20 have arms 22, 23 carrying studs 30 engaging cam grooves 25, 26 in an insulating disc 24 which is fixed to the operating shaft 27, so that rotation of the latter shifts the plates to vary the capacity. The periphery 24a of the disc 24 is tapered so as to be engaged by a vernier friction wheel 36 which is movable against the action of a spring 38 to bring the surfaces together for fine adjustment. By using spiral cam grooves, the existing square law relationship is retained, but the grooves may be modified to give other laws, such as direct, inverse, or linear frequency law.
