Brick, potter, and like kilns. - In a downdraught kiln for the manufacture of bricks and pipes, the gases from the fireplaces 2 are drawn over the bag wall 5 down through the perforated floor 7 and pass through hooded pipes 18, 18a, 18<b>, covering apertures 11 in an intermediate floor 8, to a space which communicates through openings 17 with a central flue 15. Additional radial flues 21, below the lower floor 12, extend from the main flue 15 to points adjacent the periphery of the kiln. To equalize the draught over the whole floor, the apertures in the intermediate floor, together with their covering pipes, are of greater diameter near the kiln walls as shown at 22, 20<a>, the latter apertures being formed in a ring of bricks 20 each of which is so shaped that its side edges extend radially of the kiln. The apertures 11 in the floor 8 may increase in diameter progressively towards the kiln walls and the bricks forming the central part of this floor are shaped to fit within one or more of the rings 20 without chipping or breaking. To ensure efficient firing of the goods disposed within the recess formed of bricking up the charging opening, a number of the larger apertures and hooded pipes are arranged below the floor 7 at this point.
