Catches, automatic.-A latch or retainer adapted to hold a card index tray or slide within a cabinet or the like comprises a flexible strip 62, Fig. 2, arranged on the bottom 10 of the tray adjacent to the front wall 13 and secured at one end by lugs 63 struck up from the bottom of the tray, the other end being provided with a catch or stop portion 65, Fig. 1, preferably of U-shaped section, which projects through a hole in the tray bottom and engages a ledge X on the transverse partition supporting the tray. The stop portion 65 extends upwardly and rearwardly so that its rear edge 66 is substantially flush with the bottom of the tray, thereby enabling the stop to be cammed upwardly by the ledge X when the tray is pushed in. The latch is lifted and disengaged by means of a finger-piece 67 projecting forwardly from the central portion of the strip 62 and extending through an opening 68 in the front wall, beneath the tray handle 70. To prevent the latch from being strained, due to the tray being pulled before the stop 65 is fully released, an abutment or reinforcement 69 is provided on the bottom of the tray immediately behind the stop.
