Signs ; name and number plates, letters, numerals, and the like.- A box advertising or like sign has letters or other display matter arranged in relief in or on the panels forming the display face. and outlined by opaque borders in corresponding relief so that grooves or channels separate the display matter from the borders to allow the passage of light whereby the display matter is silhouetted in relief. The sign comprises a box 1, Fig. 2, having a fixed back 2 and a hinged front panel 3 forming the display face. Letters 4 are mounted on supports 5 independently of the panel so that they stand out in relief from the front face of the panel, which is stencilled to correspond with the letters and form outlining spaces 6 about them. The apertures in the panel are provided with flanges 7 to form opaque outlining borders in corresponding relief. The sign is illuminated internally by electric lamps 13. In the form shown in Fig. 3 the letters 4 are mounted in relief on a glass panel 8 secured to the back of the hinged panel 3 by clips 9. Each letter of the sign may be mounted on a separate plate. The panel 3 may be fixed and the box 1 have top and bottom hinged doors to give access to the interior. In a further form the letters and opaque border are cemented to a glass panel so as to stand out in relief therefrom. The spaces between the borders and the letters are left clear but the remainder of the panel is painted to render it opaque. The glass panel may be mounted in fixed glazing bars or in a hinged frame. The box signs may be constructed as a series of independent units each carrying one or more letters or display elements, as shown in Fig. 9. Each unit has a removable inclined reflecting back 2, a fixed front panel 3., and an electric lamp 13 which is mounted in the base of the unit.
