Abstract

254,384. Shaw, D. E. April 1, 1925. Fixed-abutment type; working-fluid supply. - A rotary engine has hinged vanes 55 mounted in pockets in the rotor 32 and formed with a cavity 57 in communication with the fluid-supply when the vane lies within the pocket but shut off from supply and open to the working chamber when the vane moves out from the casing. The supply passage communicates with a compressing-cylinder 37 in which is a piston 38 connected to arms on a fixed crank-shaft 30 which is adjustable angularly with respect to the casing to vary the compression ratio. Each vane has pins 60 engaging cam slots 71, while the abutments 19 may be integral with or secured to the cas. ing. The engine may work as an internal-combustion engine, or it may work with steam or compressed-air, which could be still further compressed by the engine or passed through to the blades by removing the pistons 38. Vanes of different effective widths may be used to vary the output, while the vanes may be telescopic to prevent leakage.
