Abstract

Thermionic valve circuits.-A safety device for preventing excess current and indicating the occurrence of a short-circuit in connection with the batteries of a thermionic valve system comprises a. tungsten lamp or like device having a low resistance under normal conditions but a high resistance when passing abnormally higher current. Thus a lamp comprising a tungsten filament in an atmosphere of hydrogen or other inert gas may be connected as shown in Fig. 1, the terminals of the filament 6, 7 being connected to poles of the batteries 2, 3, while the middle point of the filament and the remaining poles of the batteries are respectively connected in two of the circuits of the apparatus. Should the leads 20, 21 be short-circuited the half 6 of the filament indicates the fact by glowing, its resistance at the same time increasing so as to prevent excessive current flow. Should the leads 20, 22 be short-circuited the whole filament comes into action. The ends of the filament are connected through leads of the usual type to terminals of which one is shown at 12, Fig. 2, while the middle point of the filament is connected to an additional terminal 13 on the cap 14.
