Abstract

252,027. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Byrnes, I. F.). May 11, 1925, [Convention date]. Thermionic modulating systems and apparatus. -Relates to wireless telephone transmitting systems in which radiation is inhibited except when speech is taking place. According to the present invention this is effected by inserting in the plate circuit of an amplifier. as distinct from the oscillator itself, an impedance which normally inhibits radiation but is reduced by the action of the speech currents to a value which permits radiation to take place. Thus in the system comprising the oscillator 2, amplifier 3, power amplifier 4, and modulator 5, the plate circuit of the amplifier 3 is normally choked by the control valve 6 which is included in the circuit and is normally blocked by a bias applied to its grid by the battery 8. When the microphone 9 is spoken into, however, the mean potential of the grid of the valve 6 is rendered more positive and radiation takes place. A choke prevents the oscillations in the control valve from modulating the amplifier. The transmitting apparatus shown may be combined with receiving apparatus as described in Specification 243,683.
