Abstract

251,347. Zimbel, W. Jan. 31, 1925. Cylinder machines ; number-printing apparatus. -In a cylinder printing-machine, the sheets are numbered as they pass through the machine, by means of numbering-heads e mounted on a rotary carrier c and co-operating with the impression cylinder a, the heads e being reset at each revolution of their carrier c by the engagement thereon with a cylindrical cam f, which can be moved to inoperative position either manually or automatically during the non-printing revolution, or part of a revolution, of the cylinder a. A fixed part z forms, in conjunction with the cam f, a groove in which the resetting-roller runs. The cam f is pivoted to a shaft q which is operated either by a hand-lever p or by a cam m on the shaft of the impression cylinder, a crank i and a spring-controlled rod k, the rod k having at its end a roller k<1> bearing against the cam m. The cam m is designed and timed to act according to the type of cylinder machine with which the numbering-apparatus is employed. As applied to a stop-cylinder machine, in which the sheet usually occupies about one-half of the periphery of the impression cylinder a, the rotary carrier c is geared so as to make two revolutions to each revolution of the cylinder a. As only one of the revolutions of the carrier c is a printing revolution, the resetting-mechanism must be inoperative for one revolution and the cam m moves the cam f to inoperative position during this revolution. When the numbering-apparatus is applied to a two-revolution machine with the sheet occupying practically the entire circumference of the impression cylinder, two carriers c are geared to the impression cylinder and print alternate numbers.
