With iron sleepers, the soleplates or the ribs are welded to the sleepers. The recess in the ribs may be bridged at r. The gauge-adjusting members m may have spring arms engaged by the clamps h and may be wedge-shaped with the ribs similarly cut away. The clamps h may be extended to take the place of the members m.
