Abstract

251,076. Pfeiffer, J. A. March 26, 1925. Driving - arrangements for screw propellers. - Manuallyoperated screw propeller installations comprise a vertical driving-shaft having ratchet wheels actuated by chains secured to hand levers. Brackets 14, Figs. 1, 4, clamped to the stem of the boat support a depending tube 13 in which is mounted the driving shaft 4 and below which is fitted the gearing 10 and propeller shaft 11. At the upper end, the shaft 4 carries two ratchet wheels 3 and a flywheel 20. Passing around the wheels 3 are chains 6 which are spring anchored at 7 and secured by leads 5 to the levers 1. The central tube 16 of the lever is mounted in a ball member 17 in a bracket 18 on the gunwale, the outer portion 1 being secured by a nut 19 in a split end of the tube 16. More than two pairs of levers may be provided and the drive for the ratchets may be effected through rack and pinion gears.
